The Networking Fundamentals video series is designed for technicians in the Professional Audio industry. This video covers many features and terms commonly associated with the router. Since most audio networks only operate on the Local Area Network (LAN), the router is not an essential part of the equation. However, audio professionals often need Wi-Fi capabilities for remote control applications. In that case, they often grab a wireless router instead of a WAP. Further, when remote access is desired, features like DMZ, Port Forwarding and VPN are essential. In the end, going over the router helps clarify thoughts on the difference between a LAN verses a WAN, how a basic firewall works and lays the groundwork for topics like Wi-Fi and remote access. On a personal note – I gave these presentations in person dozens of times before I filmed the series, refining the process along the way. On occasion, people asked me to skipping this part in the interest of time. I can tell you we lost more time to questions than we gained in skipping this section. If you’re putting together a networking curriculum, I advise you not to skip this topic.
