Indian boxers are set to participate in the AIBA Youth Women World Championship, starting on 19 November in Guwahati. Three of the Indian participants – Jyoti, Sakshi and Neetu spoke to The Quint about how they started boxing and their dreams and inspirations. Jyoti expressed that in the beginning, the people in her village (Rohtak district) used to say that boxing is not for girls, but her mother supported her and asked to continue her training. Once she won her first medal, everyone in her village, was supportive of her taking up boxing. She clinched a gold medal at the 6th Golden Glove women's Boxing Tournament in Serbia and a silver medal at the 31st International Ahmet Comert Boxing Tournament in Istanbul. Sakshi said that she started boxing only after watching Vijender Singh’s fights. Five-time World Championships gold medallist and Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom said that the senior boxers are still following the old style of boxing, but the youth boxers fight intelligently.
